Bayahibe is a town in the Dominican Republic, located about 10 miles east of La Romana on the shore of the Caribbean Sea. Founded as a fishing village in 1874 by Juan Brito and his family, who came from Puerto Rico, the town is now a tourist destination.
Bayahibe is an indigenous word. Its meaning is not known for sure, but there are many names that include the tainos word Baya. Baya is the name given to it to a bivalve mollusk, like clams that are glued to the rocks or roots of mangrove trees. Jib, or Hib (is the same word) is the name that gave the Indians a sort of sieve manufactured from sticks used to sift cassava flour.
Bayahibe Beach, a public beach, is located less than a mile from the town center, and Dominicus Beach is in about three miles distance. Bayahibe serves as an embarkation point for boat tours to Saona Island, a thinly inhabited island with extensive beaches located in a national park. In the vicinity of Bayahibe and Dominicus Beach, numerous large resorts are located.

Info about Accommodation in Punta Cana and Bavaro
More Information about the Punta Cana / Bavaro area
Let's talk about Punta Cana now to clarify what to expect and what NOT to expect. It's the island's most popular region for general tourism, but it's situated on the exposed eastern tip of the island, and swept by Atlantic currents and the occasionally torturous seas of the Mona Passage.
Divers who visit Punta Cana when the winter (and sometimes the summer) winds are blowing may find days where it is too rough to dive at all, and if they do get out to the reef, they'll typically find marginal visibility and minimal fish life. Prevailing winds typically blow from north and west, leaving the southeast portion of the island in a consistent lee. The calmest waters are found in Bayahibe. Be aware that almost ALL the dive shop in Punta Cana will take you most probably to Bayahibe for better diving, so, why not choose Bayahibe directly for your diving excursions and organize your dives with us before you arrive in the DR?
If you, for any reason, ended up in Punta Cana, remember that the drive from Punta Cana to Bayahibe now is only 40 minutes, since the opening of the Coral highway. It is a safe and modern road.
